Sardar Anjum Bhatti was forcibly removed from the UK yesterday morning, leaving his wife and children inconsolable at Heathrow airport, despite last minute attempts by the family solicitor to halt the flight. Mr Bhatti was detained at an Immigration Removal Centre almost two months ago, despite doctors reporting that he was the main carer for the family due to his wife's deteriorating mental health. Now there two children, aged 3 and 5, have had their father taken from them, and mother Faiza doesn't know if she can cope.
Faiza is unwell - suffering from depression and severe anxiety. She and her two children Adam, aged 5, and Saffron aged 3, have been struggling without their father. Without the support of her British relatives, Faiza may not have been able to cope, but as her husband's removal date drew near the stress was becoming too much to bear. Removal Directions were set for Monday 20th. Faiza was ordered to report to the airport with the children. She wants to be reunited with her husband, but is terrified of return to Pakistan. She says she'd rather die.
It appears that the Bhatti family are suffering under a new Home Office experiment in family persecution: detain the father in attempt to force the family to comply with removal directions. The Home Office has been made aware that he is the main carer for the children, and for his wife. And yet for two months now Faiza and her children have been without his support. This would appear to be the government's alternative to detaining children: just another version of “state-sponsored cruelty”.
